DNA sets man free after 15 years in the slammer

Check out this amazing piece that appeared in the LA Times today. It starts, “A Texas man who spent more than 15 years in prison after being wrongly convicted of kidnapping and robbery raised both arms skyward and collapsed in his mother’s embrace Thursday after being told he was a free man.” The story goes on further to say, “Waller is the 19th man in Dallas County since 2001 to be exonerated by DNA evidence of the crime for which he was convicted. That’s more than any other county in the nation, according to the Innocence Project in New York, a legal center specializing in wrongful-conviction cases.” It’s relevant to point this out because Texas has the highest execution rate of any other state in the country. Four times as much in fact! For a chart listing the number of executions by state since 1976 click here.
